Platelet indices as Predictor for Glycemic Control in Diabetes Mellitus Patients
Abstract
Diabetes is the 6th most common cause of death in the Philippines according to 2013 Philippine health Statistics, and by 2025, the WHO has projected a rise in its incidence from 171 million to 334 million. In new hematologic analyzers, platelet indices (MPV and PDW) are routinely evaluated and is shown in different studies to be indicators in vascular integrity in diabetic patients as well as determining the progression of the disease. Hence, this study aims to correlate MPV and PDW with hemoglobin A1C in patients with diabetes mellitus, and be used as a potential cost effective predictor of glycemic control in the coming years.
This will be a retrospective correlational study to diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients at Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, for comparison with non-diabetic patients from January 2019 to December 2021.In order to reduce the impact of confounding factors, hematologic disorders, pregnancy and malignancy were factors for exclusion from the study. According to the HbA1c values, diabetic patients are to be distributed into two groups: Group A represents patients with good long term glucoregulation (HbA1c <7%) and group B patients are with poor long term glucoregulation >7) and with microvascular complications. All patients who will meet the inclusion criteria will be included in the study.
